I encountered the same problem (bold and italic on Chinese characters) with the commercial version as well, and also the following issues when converting docx to pdf with Chinese characters:
- Justified setting are lost
- Character spacing setting are lost
I tried docx4j-export-fo (8.2.9) but no hope. Please advise if they can be resolved.

There is no "commercial version" of PDF output as such. We did have a commercial offering several years ago, but that was discontinued.

How far is docx4j-export-fo from meeting your needs? If close, you could add separate issues for each thing which needs to be rectified at https://github.com/plutext/docx4j/issues/ Best is a one paragraph docx showing the issue.
